Amerikan Rambler: The War of 1812 on the web and in history

From June 2012: “For the most part, the War of 1812 was not America’s finest military hour.”

Rather than a Vietnam War-like debacle, the War of 1812 was probably more of a draw. Not much changed on the map, though afterward, the English stopped impressing Americans onto English ships — a cruel practice that had contributed much to the war. Thankfully, it’s the last war the U.S. and England have fought.

North River Notes

Daily observations on the Hudson River as it passes through New York City. The section of the Hudson which passes through New York is historically known as the North River, called this by the Dutch to distinguish it from the Delaware River, which they knew as the South River. This stretch of the Hudson is still often referred to as the North River by local mariners today. All photos by Daniel Katzive unless otherwise attributed. Twitter @dannykatman
